The Earth Remembers 4

Welcome to my world!

Every time I start a new series of works I start with a sense of wonder, a speeding up of my pulse, a feeling like I can’t catch up to the things I want to express and the places I want the work to take me.

My ultimate artist fantasy would be to spend a night in the Hall of Biodiversity in New York City’s Museum of Natural History. The first time I stood in this space and took in all the shapes, patterns, and colors, it blew my mind. I’ve learned the power of simple, good design from nature. I love pattern, rhythm, and layers of experience in art.

I live in Central, MA, in the geographical center point of Massachusetts. I graduated from Skidmore College in 1987 with a degree in Studio Art.

Part of my undergraduate studies was spent at the University of Wales in Cardiff, studying Welsh language and folklore. I incorporated the sing-song nature of the Welsh language as well as the tradition of using inanimate objects as animated characters in the children’s stories and illustrations I presented at my senior show. My Welsh pride and the connection to the land remains part of my work.

I started painting seriously and selling my work in 2006. Turning 40 was pivotal for me! I began to turn towards things that brought me joy and allowed me to express myself in more tactile ways.

Teaching art to children for 11 years brought me back to my bliss and I was reminded of what has always made me the happiest: making art. Watching preschoolers explore materials and color mixing and not caring about the end result lit a fire in my creative soul. Painting abstractly has allowed me to let go and “have at it”, as a my former painting professor used to say.
